Richard M. Swanson, 69, of Soudan, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996, in his residence.
He was born July 24, 1927, in Foreston, Minn., the son of Reuben and Viola (Anderson) Swanson. He was married to Opal Rosvold on May 27, 1950, and was a longtime Tower area resident. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He was a crane operator for Erie Mining Co. and LTV Steel for 35 years, retiring in 1990. He also worked with several area businesses, including Tower Soudan Petrol and Gravel, Burgess Chevrolet, and Weingardener Construction. He was a member of the Tower Fire Department, serving in various capacities, including assistant fire chief, and had served on the Tower City Council.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Opal, in 1994.
He is survived by two daughters, Diane "DeDe" (Richard) Yapel of Sebeka and Denise "Dolly" (Tim) Mickle of Tower; three sons, Douglas R. (Janis) Swanson of Duluth, Dale (Joyce) Swanson of Tower and Duane (Carolyn) Swanson of Hibbing; a sister, Louise Schleuter of Hutchinson, Minn.; a brother, Clinton (Elaine) Swanson of Milaca; 15 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Saturday, from noon until the 1 p.m. services in Bauman Family of Funeral Homes, Vermilion Chapel, Tower. Pastor Dan Croonquist will officiate. Spring interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Tower. Family services provided by Bauman Family of Funeral Homes, Vermilion Chapel, Tower.
