Edna Ruth Sickles was born June 29, 1913 in Muskogee, Oklahoma; one of two daughters born to George Walter Sickles and Edna (Sells) Sickles. Her father was a probate attorney for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and both parents were school teachers in the Winfield, Kansas area. She met John Estey McCoy when she was only 14. They were married on July 17, 1931 only weeks after he 18th birthday. They shared 54 years together and were blessed with three children, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Ruth was active in the PTA, church activities, sewing , clubs, playing the organ, working in the yard planting flowers, roses and fruit trees and as a Girl Scout Leader. She loved to play cards, read and work crossword puzzles.
She attended Muskogee Junior College for one year and later finished her associates degree at age 50 and bachelor's degree at Northeastern in Tahlequah at age 52. After she completed her degree the couple moved to Albuquerque, NM where she taught first grade. After completing her Master's Degree Ruth was a librarian for several elementary schools in Albuquerque until her retirement in 1978. During the summer months and after retirement she and John traveled throughout the US and Canada in their motorhome.
After Johns passing in 1985, Ruth met and married Willard Hubbert Gill. They also enjoyed traveling as a couple. After Willard passed in 2000 Ruth continued her travels. She cruised with her daughter and her husband from Rome to Houston. Her final cruise was the one she had always dreamed of to New Zealand and Australia.
Edna Ruth (Sickles ) McCoy-Gill was inducted into the Oklahoma Centenarian Hall of Fame on the occasion of her 103rd Birthday Celebration.
