The Rev. Edward Deviny, C.P., 75, of St. Ann's Monastery, Scranton, died Saturday, June 15, under the care of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart at Commonwealth Regional Hospice, Scranton, after a long illness.

A native of Worcester, Mass., Father Edward was the son of the late John Deviny and Mildred Goeckeler Deviny. After attending St. John's High School Worcester, he joined the Passionists in 1957, professed his first vows Augst 1, 1959 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1966, by the Most Rev. Thomas Manning, O.F.M., Bishop of Corocio, Bolivia.

Father Deviny spent most of his years of priestly ministry as a missionary to the Passionist missions in the Philippines, where he served for 30 years. He joined his fellow Passionists in Mindanao in the Southern Philippines and ministered in many pastoral roles from 1966 to 1992. He was the Regional Vicar from 1973 to 1981 and assisted in the governance of the Philippine Vice Province from 1970 to 1973 and again from 1982 to 1992. He oversaw missionary activities from 1982 to 1988 as Procurator and was rector of the Passionist theologate in Metro Manila from 1989 to 1992. Father Deviny returned to the United States for two years and returned to the Philippines in 1995 and served in St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Marikina, Philippines, until 1999. Along with his administrative duties in the Philippines, Father Deviny, a gifted liturgist and preacher, conducted many retreats for lay people and religious during his years as a missionary. He witnessed the growth of the Passionist Community in the Philippines and assisted in the handing over of the leadership of the community to Filipino Passionists.

From 2000 to 2007 he was pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Tarboro, N.C., and then was pastor of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Atlanta, in 2008. Father Deviny had been a member of the community at St. Ann's in Scranton since 2009. During his time in Scranton, he enjoyed preaching and ministering the sacrament of reconciliation at the Monday Novena, participating in the Solemn Novena in July and being part of the Friday evening Spanish Mass as well as his weekday and Sunday celebrations of Mass at various parishes in the diocese of Scranton.

He is survived by several cousins.

The Passionists of St. Ann's would like to thank those who provided care for Father Deviny during the last months of his illness, most especially the staffs, doctors and nurses at Moses Taylor Hospital, Allied Rehabilitation Hospital, Commonwealth Regional Hospice and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.​

Father Deviny's body will be received at St. Ann's Shrine Basilica on Tuesday, June 18, at 3 p.m. His body will lie in repose for viewing until 7:30, followed by a wake service by the Rev. Francis Landry, C.P., St. Ann's Basilica Parish pastor.

A viewing will also take place on Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. The funeral Mass will be at St. Ann's on Wednesday, June 19, at 10:30, celebrated by the Very Rev. James Price, C.P., rector of St. Ann's Shrine Basilica. Burial will follow at St. Ann's.

Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home, 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton. Any memorial contributions may be made in Father Deviny's name to St. Ann's Shrine Basilica, 1233 St. Ann's St., Scranton, PA 18504.
