Gladys Albine (Hansen) Poulsen was born December 4, 1916 in Audubon, Iowa to Jens M. and Botilda (Mortensen) Hansen. She was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Kimballton and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Audubon. She attended rural schools in Audubon County.
After graduating from the 8th grade she worked as a hired man for her father on the farm and as a homemaker helper for many various families. In 1939, along with her parents and sisters, Marjorie, Doris and Verla, she moved to a farm north of Newell where she continued to work as a homemaker helper.
In 1942, she started work at the Newell Bakery and worked there until her marriage to Svend Poulsen on Februrary 22, 1943. They setup farming southeast of Newell. On February 27, 1949, their union was blessed with the birth of their only child, Elaine Margaret.
Gladys and Svend farmed for 26 years southeast of Newell. In 1969, they moved to their last farm northeast of town. In October of 1977 they retired to Storm Lake. She sold this house in 2005 and moved to McCord Apartments where she lived until she moved to the Newell Good Samaritan Center in October 2006.
Gladys was a member of Nain Luthern Church and active in the W.E.L.C.A. She also enjoyed cooking, canning, sewing, quilting, making items out of plastic canvas and tending to her garden and flower beds.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband Svend in 2001; daughter Elaine in 1993, and her sister, Verla Mae Hansen in 2007.
