Civil War Papers. Sylvester Skeesuck enrolled on the 16th day of October,1861 at Calumet, Wis., was mustered into the military service of the United States on 24th day of January, 1862., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the term of three years. Re-enlisted and re-mustered as Veteran Volunteer, February 29th, 1864 at Rolla, Missouri for three years: appointed Corporal August 16th, 1864. Mustered out with company as Corporal on the 15th day of November, 1865 at Austin, Texas.
The records further show that said soldier when enlisted was 18 years of age, and by occupation a farmer.

was 26 years of age I had my name legally changed from Sylvester Skeesuck to Sylvester Sykes."
