Jane was the youngest of six known children born to DeNyse De Nyse and Teuntje Van Brunt of New Utrecht and Fort Hamilton (now in Brooklyn), New York. She was married to Hugh Smith. She and Hugh had four known children, named in the will of her sister, Rime Stewart, surname SMITH:
