World War II United States Army Soldier. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. The story of his unit was detailed by historian Stephen Ambrose 1993 work "Band of Brothers" and the subsequent popular 2001 HBO miniseries of the same name. He lost his right leg during a German artillery barrage on December 16, 1944 while the unit was in line near the village of Foy, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge.
