Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late John W. and Blanche E. Ressel Alexander. He was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School. He was a veteran of the US Army. Merle worked for the Lancaster Newspapers as a circulation manager working with newspaper carriers for 51 years retiring in 1996.
He was a member of Lititz United Methodist Church and enjoyed raising orchids and working with ceramics.
Merle was married to Alma F. Alexander for 28 years on Oct. 7. Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 sisters, Ruth Nissley, Lancaster, Hazel (Ted) Houghton, Millersville; and a brother, Carl Alexander, Williamsport.
