Omaha World Herald, Friday, March 29, 1957:
"An Omaha mother, who preferred to stand humbly in the background while her children spread the family name with honor throughout the world, went to her final resting place Friday.
A large congregation of national, state and local church and governmental leaders paid final homage to Mrs. Mary A. Gruenther, 85, at solemn funeral mass at St. Cecilia Cathedral. Graveside rites were at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York, world-renowned churchman, came to give absolution and conduct graveside rites.
Archbishop Gerald T. Bergan, Omaha; Msgr. Nicholas Wegner, Boys Town, and the Rev. Carl M. Reinert, S.J., president of Creighton University, participated.
Among the flowers banded high at the cemetery was a white floral cross. It bore the card of President and Mrs. Eisenhower.
Such was the respect shown for the dignity and memory of the mother who preferred to be called "Mayme".
Msgr. E. G. Graham, pastor of the Cathedral where she had received communion almost daily for some 35 years, spoke there words:
"The presence here of such a diversified group of ranking national and international leaders of church and state is a very significant tribute to an almost vanished type of totally unselfish motherhood. We mourn an old, rarely found type of mother, who imbued her children with deeply rooted habits of faith while quietly leading her humble existence in our midst."
The "monuments" to Mrs. Gruenther's life sat with bowed heads during the solemn services. They are her children:
General Alfred M. Gruenther, brilliant World War II tactician, former chief of staff to General Eisenhower, retired supreme commander of NATO in Europe and now president of the American Red Cross.
Homer H. Gruenther, Washington, D. C., administrative assistant to President Eisenhower.
Louis P. Gruenther, Omaha, Farm Credit Administration attorney.
Mrs. Garrison (Gar) Davidson, wife of the superintendent of West Point Military Academy.
Mrs. Raymond E. McGrath, wife of an Omaha attorney."
