Jerry A Goodwin

LAVALE- Jerry Allen Goodwin passed away on February 27th at WMHS surrounded by loving family, clergy, and friends.
Mr. Goodwin was born in Granby, CO, on September 28, 1935, to parents Jess and Neva Pettit. He was later adopted by his stepfather, Clint Goodwin. Following graduation from Kanopolis High School in Kanopolis, KS, the deceased attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, KS, graduating with a degree in liberal arts having majored in business administration.
In 1969, Mr. Goodwin came to Cumberland as the first director of the Urban Renewal Agency of the city. His noteworthy professional background included positions with the Ellsworth, KS, Chamber of Commerce, and as Urban Renewal Director in Salina and Augusta, KS. When the local Urban Renewal Agency was phased out, Jerry became Director of Community Development for the city of Cumberland. The realization of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the onset of the popular downtown Farmers' Market taking place on the Historic Downtown Mall, and the beginning of the local recycling program all occurred during Jerry's tenure with his perseverance and persistence.
He was truly dedicated to the city of Cumberland, and he was affectionately called "Mr. Herman Renewgal" by his close friends! Mr. Goodwin is survived by Joan Luttrell Goodwin, his wife of thirty-eight years, and his children Shara Cole and husband David of Berryville, VA; Marc Goodwin and partner Steven Dexter of Boise, ID; Brent Goodwin of Winchester, VA; Deborah Wade Wilson and husband Clarence of Simpsonville, SC; Jennifer Wade Tuttle and husband David of Greenville, SC; fifteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters Sharon Fitzgerald of Kanopolis, KS; Joy Mayne and husband Robert of Gypsum, CO; Marlene Pettit of Littleton, CO; and Carole Richards of Glenwood Springs, CO.
The deceased was preceded in death by his mother, stepfather, father, stepmother, Kay Pettit, and his brother, Ronald Pettit.
A celebration of life service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, LaVale, where Jerry was a member, on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 1:00 PM with visitation beginning at 11:30 AM.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the pavilion fund of Christ Lutheran Church, the Union Rescue Mission, or the Salvation Army.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland.
