David was born on September 20, 1936 in Great Bend, Kansas, and raised in Yates Center, Kansas, the son of George "Junior" Andrew and Flossie Louise Woods Rife. He married Nina Ball; they were divorced. He later married Olive "Skip" A. Stead on July 5, 1985 in Emporia. She survives.
Other surviving family members include: his sons, David Rife, Jr., and wife Peggy of Butler, Missouri, and Clinton Rife of Emporia; daughter, Lois Purvis and husband Randy of Topeka, Kansas; stepdaughters, Diana Hirt and husband Dude, and Cheryl Smart and husband Barry, both of Emporia; brother, Donald Rife of Waverly, Kansas; sisters, Eva Johnson of Yates Center, Connie Mann of Wellsville, Kansas, and Mary Dodson of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a stepson, Steve Hollar; a sister, Marjorie Winston; and a brother, Charles Rife.
David worked for Reading Grain and Lumber for several years, and also had a restaurant in Reading. He later worked for EVCO in Emporia, and Strawder Security. He served in the United States Navy, and drove the van for Disabled American Veterans. Dave was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, and helped out at the Emporia Senior Center. He was an avid collector of anything John Deere and tools.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 10, 2014 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. until service time Monday. Burial with Military Honors will be at Chicago Mound Cemetery, southeast of Emporia.
