Rev. Dr. William Durant, DD
Rev. Durant was born in Albany, New York Aug. 19, 1846 and was the son of William Clark and Ann Elizabeth (White) Durant. Rev. Durant was a Presbyterian Clergyman, and an avid genealogy student. He was related to Henry Fowle Durant the founder of Wellesley College, and a descendant in the eight generation to George Durant the English settler at Middletown, Connecticut, in 1663. Mr. Durant prepared for college at the Albany Academy, and graduated from Yale University in the class of 1868, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1872. He was a member of Scroll and Keys and Alpha Delta Phi at Yale and a member of the Sons of the Revolution.
On graduating he became pastor of the Sixth Presbyterian Church at Albany, N. Y., and filled that position until 1882, removing to Morristown, New Jersey. In 1887 he went to the Boundary Avenue Church at Baltimore, Maryland until 1892 when he accepted a call from the First Church, at Saratoga Springs, New York, where he retired in 1898.
In 1878 he was married to Elizabeth Frances Stantial, she died in Morristown, New Jersey in 1885. Two years later he married her sister Lucy Stantial. He had a daughter Miss Louis Pierson Durant and a son William Clark Durant of Worcester.
Dr. Durant edited a series of articles by Rev. Charles Hodge, D. D., and under the title of "Church Polity" and published them in Scribner's in 1878. He also compiled a history with genealogical data, of the First Presbyterian Church at Morristown, New Jersey, and other essays and genealogical works. His degree was conferred on him in 1894 by Union College of Schenectady, N. Y. He was also honorary chaplain of the Saratoga Lodge of Elks.
He died March 1, 1914 in Wellesley, Massachusetts and was buried March 3, 1914 in the Albany Rural Cemetery in Albany, New York.
