New Hampshire Governor. After his high school graduation, he had a tryout with the Washington Senators baseball team and played for their minor league team for a year, until an arm injury ended his career. He then worked as an automobile salesman in Littleton, New Hampshire, in 1948 and became full owner of the Hugh Gallen Automobile Dealership, in 1964. He served on the Littleton, New Hampshire, Planning Board, (1962-65), served as director of the New Hampshire-Vermont Development Council, (1969-72) and as the director of White Mountain Community Services, (1967-70). He also was the first Democrat to serve as a New Hampshire State House of Representatives, in 1973. In 1978, he was elected as a Democrat the 74th Governor of Hampshire, serving until his death from a blood infection at age 58.
