He was the son of Samuel Addison Swanson and Sarah Eliza Witcher Swanson and was the last of seven children.
He was married to Fannie Swanson who died about 20 years ago. They had no children.
He was the second cousin of Senator Claude A Swanson and John P Swanson of Danville.
He had friends in all sections of Pittsylvania County, VA for he had, during forty years, built up a large rural medical practice. He was one of the few remaining country doctors who not only treated the sick but operated in emergencies at the home of the patient, this being in a day before hospitals were available in this section.
He was a familiar figure travelling the country roads in Winter on horseback and with his saddle bags and in Summer in his buggy. Of recent years, he had not been so active in his practice but was frequently called on for medical service to which he willingly responded.
Funeral services where held at the old Swanson home at Grady, VA about four miles West of Callands, VA.
Interment was in the Swanson Family Cemetery.
