John's mother brought her children to Alaska when he was nine years old and he grew up in the Dillingham area where he resided for many years raising a family and working as a commercial bush pilot and salmon fisherman. He and his wife, Janice, made their home in Pilot Point upon their marriage in 1973 where he continued to fly commercially and fish during the summer months.
After retirement, John spent a lot of time visiting with family and friends, particularly in the summer when the fishing fleet would come to town. He will be fondly remembered by many as an outgoing and friendly man who never met a stranger. They were just friends who hadn't yet become acquainted.
John and Jan cherished their many pet dogs during their 40 years of marriage, the most recent of which are Maggie and Cinnamon. They were wonderful companions for him in the last few years as he struggled with health issues that required him to be hospitalized several times and receive special care at home. In spite of his health challenges, he never lost his joyful spirit or engaging personality. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
John is survived by his wife, Janice; his children, Virginia Johnson, Fred Ball, Doug Ball, and Linda Kozak; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, Albert Ball; sisters, Francis Wren-Tommila and Carol McMichael; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held at the O'Malley Seventh-day Adventist Church in Anchorage on Saturday, March 1st, followed by a burial service in Dillingham.
An obituary was published in Anchorage Daily news on Feb. 27, 2014.
