Phyllis Jean (McCoy) Watkins, 62, of Joplin, MO, and formerly of Wheeler, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at her home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Latona Church of Christ, Latona, with Nate Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Trexler Cemetery, rural Newton.
Phyllis was born on January 18, 1952 south of Dietrich, IL the daughter of William "sonny" and Violet (Niendick) McCoy. She was raised south of Dieterich in rural Jasper County, IL and attended Newton Community High School graduating in 1970. She met the love of her life, David Watkins, at Newton Community High School and they were married on August 12, 1972. To this union two children were born Christopher David on October 21, 1979 and Jennifer Lynn on January 12, 1981.
Phyllis worked in the business office at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL for 39 1/2 years before retiring in December 2010. She was a member of the Latona Church of Christ. She shared her love of Christ by serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years.
On May 21, 2012 Phyllis suffered a brain aneurysm and after. 1 1/2 years of long hospital stays and numerous surgeries, she was able to relocate and be with her family in Joplin, MO. She was able to spend the last several months at home with her loving family before God called her to her eternal home.
Phyllis is survived by; Husband of 41 years, David Watkins of Joplin, MO; son, Christopher Watkins, daughter, Jennifer (Tim) Siemer, both of Joplin, MO; granddaughters, Macy and Piper Siemer both of Joplin, MO; two brothers, Floyd (Linda) McCoy of Newton,IL, Darrell (Sharon) McCoy of Matteson, IL; four sisters, Donna (Dick) Feldhake of Effingham, IL, Sharon Kay Winterrowd of Bourbonnais, IL, Wanda (Leroy) Haarman of Wheeler, IL, Diane Holt of Vienna, IL; two sister-in-laws, Joan McCoy of Effingham, IL, Carol McCoy of Rogersville, MO.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Catherine McCoy, brothers, Medford McCoy and Jerry McCoy.
