of Germantown, Md., loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Washington Hospital Center. She was the beloved wife to the late Leland Bray, who passed away almost thirty years ago on August 16, 1984.
Shirley was born December 5, 1920 in Rochester, New York, a daughter of the late George and Zara Hull Davis.
She worked for years as a bookkeeper while her husband served in the U.S. Army, often moving around the country, making lifelong memories with her daughters, while her husband was serving overseas. Later in life she served as a dedicated volunteer for a number of years, to her Homeowners Association, the Upper Montgomery Community Center, and many other community organizations.
Family and friends were Shirley's love and joy. She enjoyed reading the paper, staying up-to-date on current events, and loved playing bridge with her friends. Shirley will be remembered for her tenacity, spunk and independence; living on her own and driving (up until a year ago). She was affectionately known as Mom, Grandma, and Gigi.
She is survived by two daughters: Sharon Compton, and husband Thomas, of Germantown; and Gayle Pfeil and husband Mike, of Fredericksburg, VA; four grandchildren, Shawn Compton and wife Melissa, of Monrovia, Todd Compton and wife Jennifer, of Germantown, Jeffery Pfeil and wife Delien of Japan, and Jan Renaud of Fredericksburg, VA; ten great-grandchildren, Zachary, Blake, Meghan, Olivia, Jack, Andrew, Arianna, AJ, Chandlar and Skylar. She will also be missed by her dear friends, June, Mary, Hazel, Peggy, and Norma.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 7, at Molesworth-Williams P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Md. 20872. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at the funeral home. The Reverend D.D. Adams of Providence United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment, at a later date, will be in Arlington National Cemetery, where she will lay to rest with her husband Leland. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions in Shirley's name to Montgomery County Humane Society, 14645 Rothgeb Drive, Rockville, Maryland 20850.
