S. Anselm was born to John and Margaret (Schaefer) Hiltner on September 13, 1913, in Wales, N.D. She entered Saint Benedict's Monastery in 1934 and made her perpetual profession on July 11, 1938. S. Anselm attended the St. Paul Diocesan Teachers College and later received a B.A. in elementary education from the College of Saint Benedict. She taught primary grades for over 30 years in Bismarck, N.D.; Anaconda, Mont.; Melrose, Wadena, Sauk Centre and St. Anthony's in St. Cloud, Minn.
From 1970-1972 S. Anselm taught catechetics at White Earth Indian Reservation. Following this, she served as housekeeper and sacristan at Saint Benedict's Hospital Convent in Odgen, Utah. S. Anselm returned to Northern Minnesota in 1974 and served at the Red Lake Indian Reservation until 1976. She then served as housekeeper at St. Gertrude's Convent in St. Cloud. From 1978-1991 Sister supervised housekeeping at St. Raphael's Home. In retirement at Saint Scholastica Convent since 1991, she assisted in the dining room and devoted herself to prayer and community living.
S. Anselm is survived by her Benedictine community and her siblings: Alphonse of Langdon, N.D.; Michael, Aloysius, and Rita (Gibson) of Wales, N.D.; John of Yankton, S.D.; William of Minneapolis, Tillie (Ed) Koehmstedt of Strathcona; Rose (Jerome) Imholte of Watkins; Theresa (Jerome) Stengler of Albany, Minn.; and Clara (Adolph) Druar of Osnabrock, N.D. She was preceded in death by two brothers (Andrew and Anthony) and one sister, Leodette Hiltner, OSB.
