Bill was born to William and Ludella Cohee Whitt on July 13, 1927 in Albion, NE. His father died in 1935 and his mother in 1939. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Rhoda Cohee in Crowell, NE along with his two younger brothers. He graduated from high school in Scribner, NE in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the US Coast Guard. He was discharged in June of 1946.
Following his discharge, he traveled to Greybull, WY to visit one of his brothers. He worked on a ranch near Shell, WY until September of 1947 when he moved to Thermopolis where he worked for Coca Cola Bottling as a route salesman. During that time he met his wife to be, Jean Irvine in Lander, WY. They were married in Casper, WY on November 21, 1948.
In April of 1948 he enlisted in the Wyoming Army National Guard in Thermopolis. On February 1, 1949 he went to work full time for the Thermopolis unit, Battery A, 300th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. In August of 1950, Battery A was called into Federal Service for the Korean War and was sent to Korea in January 1951. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received on July 14, 1951. He was flown to Kobe, Japan for treatment in the US Army Hospital. He returned to Battery A in late August 1951. He served as Master Sergeant until he was rotated back to the US in January 1952.
Upon the return of Battery A from Korea in 1953, he went back to work for the unit as a full time technician. He retired in July 1987 as a Chief Warrant Officer after 39 years of military service.
He was a member of the Retired Military Officers Association, Reserve Officers Association, Military Order of St. Barbara, National Guard Association of the US (life member), VFW Post 2281 Thermopolis, and American Legion Post 18 Thermopolis. He was a Trustee of St. Francis Catholic Church for 25 years. He volunteered many years for Meals on Wheels and served on the Hot Springs County Library Board.
After their retirement in 1987, he and Jean enjoyed traveling in their RV. They both loved traveling and camping but never traveled for extended periods as they did not want to be away from their home, children, and grandchildren for very long.
Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years Donna Jean, his son Michael Wade, a grandson Kailan William, brothers Slim Whitt and Fred Whitt, and sisters, Birdeen Morris and Marcella Taylor.
