Italian tenor, one of opera's true legends. Remembered as a Rossini tenor,he made his mark in the newer Romantic style, creating the tenor leads in Bellini's and Donizetti's operas. He made his professional debut in 1814 at Pavia. From 1831 to 1843 he performed chiefly with London or Paris casts. Toured Germany and Holland with F. Liszt in 1843 and later that year performed in Russia, where Czar Nicholas I appointed him colonel of the Imperial Music. Though not noted for his looks or acting,he was celebrated for his supreme vocal artistry, including his phenomenally high range.
