Neal Sides Obituary
AIKEN, S.C. - On January 15, 2008, Neal O'Jean Sides laid down the working tools of life. He started his journey on January 06, 1925 in the foothills of South Carolina near Travelers Rest. Leaving home after high school, he served his country aboard the USS Bangust in the Pacific during WWII. After the war, he met, fell in love with, and married the love of his life, Elizabeth Rivers, who also served her country as a cadet nurse during the war. They began their life together in Charleston, S.C. In 1952 Neal moved his family to Aiken, S.C. and started working for Dupont at the Savannah River Plant. Retiring in 1983, Neal and Betty's love for the coast carried them back to the low country near Ridgeland, S.C. until the passing of his wife in 1998.
During his life, Neal was very active in many fraternal organizations. He was a member and served as officer of DESA, a Navel society for sailors who served on Destroyer Escort ships. Master and later served as secretary of Stafford Masonic Lodge #216 in Furman, S.C. An active member and also serving as an officer in the Scottish Rite, York Rite and Jamil Shrine organizations.
Neal is survived by his 2nd wife of 7 yrs., Nancy N. Sides; his children, Larry (Marlene) Sides of Augusta, Ga., Deborah (Boyd) Armitage of Augusta, Ga., Greg (Jeannette) Sides of Monetta, S.C.; three grandchildren, Amanda (Jay) Johnson of Charleston, S.C., Amelia Grace Sides of Augusta, Ga., and Zachary Neal Sides of Monetta, S.C.; one great-granddaughter, Sophea Rose Johnson of Charleston, S.C.; sister, Doris S. Arend of Texas; step-sons, Douglas Norton, Charlotte, N.C. and Keith Norton, Asheville, N.C.; step- grandchildren, Tiffany Burrell, Douglas Norton, Jr., and Darrell Norton; and a great-step grandchild, Alexander Timothy Norton.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Elizabeth R. Sides; brother, Arthur Sides; and sisters, Clara Reynolds and Thelma Parker. The people of Neal's time are often called the "Greatest Generation," because they put service to their country and communities before their own needs. When they are gone the world will be a much lesser place. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children- Greenville, 950 West Faris Rd., Greenville S.C. in honor of Neal Sides.
Daddy requested that this poem become a part of his obituary: Crossing the Bar Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me, And may there be no moaning at the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the Boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark. For though from out our bourne of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.
