Don May was born on June 15, 1927 to Dell and Ethelyn (McDonald) May in Clear Lake, South Dakota. He grew up in Clear Lake where he attended school and graduated from Clear Lake High School. Don was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the 17th Infantry Regiment during the Korean Conflict.
On August 13, 1953 he married Helen J. Kettelhut in the Parsonage of St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD. The couple operated an ice cream shop in Clear Lake for a short time. He then joined the Watertown Police force until 1963 and continued on the Police reserve. Don was employed for many years by the U.S. Post Office until his retirement in 1987. His wife Helen passed away on October 26, 1994.
Don was a Charter member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Elks, VFW, and American Legion. He enjoyed living at the lake for over 50 years, fishing, golfing, playing cards and spending time with his best friend, Evan Waba.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; one brother, Cato May; and one sister, Ilo Bren.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Steve) Fryslie, Steven (Susan) May and Lindee (Mike) Waba; his brother, Lynn "Doc" (Mary "Tina") May; his sister-in-law, Peggy May; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
