Edna June Littlefield Jarrard, 90, endured to the end and passed away at the Legacy Retirement Residence, Friday February 28, 2014 of natural causes. A granddaughter of Mormon pioneers and a daughter of the Great Depression, Edna came from good stock who pioneered "the South country" near Bryce Canyon, Cannonville, Henrieville and Tropic in southern Utah. She never forgot her pioneer heritage nor the Great Depression and reminded her children of that frequently. When asked if they could have this or that, her reply would always begin with "during the Depression…" And then the request would be withdrawn.
She could make do, stretch, sew, mend or craft what was needed with her own hands and skills. There was even a family rumor that her father, William Omer Littlefield, once crafted an infant's shoe out of a carrot-it was true. She was handy and artistic; every grandchild and great-grandchild could expect an Afghan or hand-crafted blanket or comforter shortly after birth. She made friends easily and left many of them behind at the Legacy Retirement Residence in South Jordan, a treasure trove of wonderful senior citizens, who filled her life with companionship in her last few years. One dear friend, Renee Christensen, was even seen feeding her just days before her death, encouraging her to take a few more bites. And, true to her faith, Edna finished her visiting teaching just a day or two before she died, taking slow steps from apartment to apartment at the Legacy Center, pushing her walker and tethered to an oxygen line.
Edna was born June 6, 1923 in Marysvale, Utah to William Omer Littlefield and Mary Elvira Campbell, the second surviving daughter and sixth of seven children. The family lived on the edge of poverty their entire lives, but they carried on and eventually made their way north first to Sandy, then Murray and then Salt Lake City. She married Jack E. Jarrard November 20, 1944 (later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in January, 1958). Grandpa Jack passed away in 2001.
She is survived by five children, Greg (and Christie) Jarrard of South Jordan, Jeanne (and Gerald) Greenwood, Draper; David (and Robin) Jarrard, Salt Lake City, Julie (and Ron) Miller of West Jordan, and Jill (and Ken) Ince of Syracuse. Edna's posterity also includes 20 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held Thursday, March 6th for family and friends at Goff Mortuary at 8090 South State in Sandy, Utah from 6 pm to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7th, 2014 at 12 Noon with a viewing at 11:00 am at the West Jordan River Oaks LDS ward meeting house at 8950 South 1300 West in West Jordan, Utah. Burial will be in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Sandy, Utah. The family would like to thank those who cared for her in her last few weeks, including Dr. Danesh Rahimi, Lisa Barr, from Millcreek Home Health and Hospice and the staff and fellow residents and Legacy. www.goffmortuary.com
