There is an interesting error on William's grave stone. It says he was born in 1827. This would mean a few hard to believe facts – he was 17 years younger than his wife, he was 8 years old when his daughter Harriet was born and 13 years old when his son Rutillus was born. William's parents were Silas Alden (1765-1842) and Charity Staples (1778-1859). Charity's Find A Grave page lists the names and birth dates of her 15 children. That page says William was born on 11 October 1807. Had he been born 11 Oct. 1827, Charity would have been 49 years old. While women in the 19th century did bear children into their early 40s – 49 is pushing the envelope a bit. For more solid proof of the error, see the 1850 census where William is 43 to Louisa's 39 and the 1860 census where he is 52 to her 49. The gravestone birth date should read "11 Oct. 1807."
