Deceased Name: Andy Belmont Wilbank - Larry "Denny" Wilbanks - Columbus father, son die in wreck

A Columbus father and son were killed in a car wreck Saturday on Highway 25 near Louisville as they were driving home from a family funeral.

Larry "Denny" Wilbanks, 59, of 301 Hospital Drive and his father, Andy Belmont Wilbanks, 84, of 58 Green Hollow Circle, died in the accident, which also injured five motorists in another vehicle.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Tommy Coleman said Denny Wilbanks was driving north on Highway 25 at 7:08 p.m. in a 2004 Ford truck when his vehicle crossed the median about four-tenths of a mile north of Sims Road in Louisville and struck a 2001 Ford, make unavailable, driven by Matthew Ware, 32, of Hattiesburg.

Denny and Belmont Wilbanks were pronounced dead at the scene, Coleman said.

A family friend confirmed this morning the Wilbankses were returning from the funeral of Etha Wilbanks, Belmont Wilbanks' wife and Denny Wilbanks' mother, held in Carthage earlier in the afternoon.

Denny Wilbanks had recently returned from Kuwait, where he had been assigned for a second tour of duty with his National Guard unit before learning of his mother's death.

The family friend said troopers from the MHP told the family it appeared from skid marks on the road and median that Denny Wilbanks had swerved to avoid something and hit a culvert in the median, which flipped the truck and sent it into the oncoming lanes.

Ware and one of his passengers, Nell Hahn, 67, of Jackson, were transported to University Medical Center in Jackson. Renee Ware, 30; Jackie Ware, 6; and Conner Ware, 2, were all transported to Winston Medical Center in Louisville.
Denny Wilbanks formerly owned and operated Wilbanks Security. His wife, Shirley Wilbanks, is a realtor in Columbus.

Funeral services for Denny Wilbanks will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel and at 3 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church in Carthage. Burial will follow at Leake Memorial Gardens in Carthage. Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church.
