Poet. She wrote under the pseudonym Laurence Hope and was best known for her erotic poetry. A Daughter of Colonel Arthur Cory, she was educated at a private school in England, and then went to live with her parents in India. Following her marriage to Colonel Malcolm Nicolson of the Bengal Army, she wrote her first volume of poetry, "The Garden of Kama and other Love Lyrics from India, arranged in Verse by Laurence Hope," which was published in 1901. The book, presumed to be written by a man, attracted a considerable amount of attention. The influence of English poet, Algernon Charles Swinburne, was obvious in her work. Colonel Nicolson died during a prostate operation and two months later, Adela committed suicide by drinking poison. Her first book was republished posthumously with the title, "Songs from the Garden of Kama" and some of her shorter poems were used in musical productions. In 1922, her son, Malcolm Josceline Nicolson, had an additional work called "Selected Poems" published.
