Fran was born October 8, 1914 in the family farm home of her parents, John and Lena (Zorn) Swanson in Brookings County, South Dakota. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1932 and received her two year teaching certificate from General Beadle in Madison in 1934. Fran taught for five years and married Richard L. Hurlbut on November 5, 1938. They raised four sons, Larry, Richard, Alan and David.

In 1958, Fran started teaching in Watertown and began attending summer school. She received her B.S. degree in Education from Dakota State in 1964 and continued to teach in Watertown until she retired in 1978. Her husband Richard died on June 27, 1980.

Fran was a wonderful mother who loved her Lord and her family and encouraged her sons in all their activities. She had a quiet and gentle spirit and a heart for service in her church and community. Fran was an active member of the First Congregational Church for over fifty years. She taught Sunday school and served on the pastoral call committee, president of the Woman's Fellowship, chairwoman of the church Guild for many years as well as Church Women United, the church rummage sale and quilting bee. She was active and held various offices in the American Legion Auxiliary for many years, Vesta Chapter #1 Order of Eastern Star, Kappa Gamma Delta, Meals on Wheels and the Watertown Area Retired Teachers Association. She was honored by the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association in the middle 1980's for "Outstanding Community Service". Fran also traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in her later years.

Fran was preceded in death by her husband Richard and son Richard, II.

She is survived by three sons, Larry, Alan and his wife Linda, and David and his wife Patti; one brother, Don Swanson and his wife, Doris; eleven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
