Daniel Pitman was a coal miner from England. He came to America in September 1877 with his parents (James & Ann) who had joined the church (LDS). Daniel was not a member, and he left a wife and a baby daughter, Alice, in England. She refused to come with him. On two different occasions he sent passage money. The first time she used the money and stayed in England, the second time he fixed it so the money had to be used for passage or be returned to him. The money came back.

Daniel and his parents left Liverpool England 19 Sep. 1877 aboard the ship Wisconsin and arrived in New York on 29 Sep 1877. They located at Spanish Fork, Utah, their first home being a blacksmith shop. Later they located on the Spanish Fork bench in a small adobe house and built one large room in front and 2 small rooms in back. They planted fruit trees and alfalfa. It was very nice and comfortable, and it was also neat and clean.

However Daniel was a coal miner and knew little about other kinds of work. He left his parents in Spanish Fork while he went to looking for work. He worked at Mercur in early days and at the old bullion Beck mine at Tintic. He was leaded while working there and was very ill for some time. He worked the coal mines in Scofield being one of the first miners in the new camp.

In September of 1882, Daniel, his wife Mary Ann, and daughter Alice moved to Scofield. He had built a little lumber shack one large front room with a lean to. The ceiling was factory and large flowered cretonne covered the large room. The winters were very cold and snow very deep, they suffered terrible the first winter in camp. This little shack was built on the hillside high up the wagon road called the dugway, which went around the mountain just above the house. The powder house was just a short distance below, that was where the coal company stored the powder (black powder) used for shooting the coal in the mine, the railroad track was in the bottom. The canyon called Winter Quarters was a long narrow canyon, houses built on the mountain sides, it was a beautiful canyon, tall pines reaching high heavenward on the one side on the other beautiful wild flowers, quaken aspen and large rocks it was indeed a beauty spot, a creek of lovely clear water made it's way on down the canyon alongside the railroad track. Later Daniel bought a larger home further up the canyon which was much nicer and more comfortable.

Daniel worked long hours in the mines and much of the time during the winter months would not see daylight only once a week on Sunday, going to the mine before daylight and returning after dark. He was compelled to buy everything needed from the company store and prices were very high for everything. Daniel was considered a very good miner and had began working in the coal pits in Great Britain when only eight years of age. Daniel's father James's health was not very good after coming to America and he suffered a stroke around 1883, losing the use of one side of his body, resulting that Daniel's parents and brother Meshach having to reside with Daniel and his wife Mary Ann. Following a second stroke James died in November 1884. A Mr. Eccles made the casket for James and he was buried in Spanish Fork.

Daniel, his son John Jr. and brother Meshack were among the fatalities when the No. 4 Mine at Winter Quarters UT explosion occurred on 1 May 1900. Daniel and son John were buried in Spanish Fork, (ref. pg,65 of J. W. Dilley's book "history of the Scofield Mine Disaster"). Meshack was buried in Scofield.
