Francis was born to Capt. Jonathan Cogswell and Elizabeth Wainwright in Chebacco Parish, Ipswich, in 1698.

He married Elizabeth Rogers on Mar. 14, 1727. Elizabeth was the daughter of Rev. John and Martha (Whittingham) Rogers. Elizabeth was born on July 28, 1707 in Ipswich, where they resided in their married life and raised their children. Their children were:

1. Elizabeth, b. Dec 23, 1729; Died in infancy.

2. John, b. 1731; Died young.

3. Elizabeth Cogswell, b. Aug. 4,1736, d. May 1777 in Hamden, Maine; m. Elihu Hewes on Oct. 6, 1756 in Ipswich. They had eight children.

4. Francis Cogswell, b. 1737, d. 1762 in Ipswich; m. Eunice Low on Oct. 22, 1756.

5. John Cogswell, b. Sep. 17, 1738, d. Jan. 30, 1818 in Boston; m1. Abigail Gooding on Dec. 2, 1762 in Boston; m2. Abiel Page on Apr. 10, 1782 in Boston; m3. Mary Cazneau on May 24, 1804 in Boston; m4. Sarah Tuckerman on Jul. 18, 1811 in Boston. He was a cabinetmaker in Boston and listed in a few antique collector references.

6. Jonathan Cogswell, b. Dec. 23, 1739, d. Mar. 20, 1782 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

7. Martha Cogswell, b. Jul. 25, 1742; Died in infancy.

8. Daniel Cogswell, b. Sep. 23, 1744; Died in infancy.

9. Nathaniel Cogswell, b. Dec. 2, 1747; Died in infancy.

10. William Cogswell, b. Jun. 11, 1750, d. May 27, 1823; m. Abigail Dawes on May 24, 1773. They had fifteen children.

"Francis Cogswell fitted for college in the Ipswich Grammar School, and graduated from Harvard College in 1718. Mr. Cogswell was a merchant. He built and lived in what was called the "Sawyer House." He was appointed a Justice of the Peace, and represented the town in the General Court in 1750, 1751, and 1752.

His will was dated Feb. 25, 1755 and proved Mar. 29, 1756. Mrs, Elizabeth Cogswell was the executrix. Elizabeth, Francis, John, Jonathan, and William appear as children: the others were dead."

Elizabeth (Rogers) Cogswell survived her husband by 26 years. She died in Exeter, New Hampshire on May 9, 1782, at the home of her twin brother, Rev. Daniel Rogers.
