Jerry L. McConnell, 74, longtime North Liberty and Solon area resident, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at his home following a sudden heart-related ailment. A gathering time for family and friends to celebrate Jerry's life will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the charity of their choice.

Jerry was born Oct. 24, 1939, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Thane Edgar and Ruthe Frances Everett McConnell. He was a graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School and attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Jerry served his country in the U.S. Army. On Dec. 31, 1965, he married Sue Beaver in West Liberty.

Jerry was employed with Quaker Oats in the engineering department, retiring in 1995.

Jerry loved motorcycles and believed in motorcycle safety. He taught a class for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation at Kirkwood Community College and most recently began volunteering at the Iowa City VA Health Care System. Jerry loved tinkering and was a handyman. He enjoyed collecting "Cookie Monster" memorabilia, doing the crossword puzzle and traveling to Alaska, Europe and beyond. Jerry loved playing Santa Claus at the Solon Library and North Liberty Recreation Center and had an end-less supply of jokes that he never hesitated to share with one and all.

Most important to Jerry was his love of family and especially being a grandfather.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Sue; their two sons, Marc (Melissa) McConnell of Mount Pleasant and Don (Debi) McConnell of Mendota Heights, Minn.; five grandchildren, Thane, Kelsey, Nathan, Aidan and Riley; two sisters, Jo (Bob) Sanders of Anchorage, Alaska, and Dee Edder of Salley, S.C.; his mother-in-law Lourena Beaver of West Liberty; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Steve (Shelia) Beaver, Jody (Diane) Beaver, Jan VeDepo (Mark Vetter), Alan Beaver (Donna Bruns) and Andy (Becky) Beaver; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law.
