Russell F. Melhart, 88, died on February 26, 2014 in Bellingham.

He was born on August 8, 1925 in Bellingham, to Edward and Claire Melhart.

Russ served in WWII and was member of the 24th Infantry Division which made the initial landing on the island of Letye in the Philippines on October 20, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart in that operation.

Russ was a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the Bellingham Yacht Club and enjoyed Christy's Travel Club. For many years he also enjoyed winters in Hawaii with his wife, Freida.

Russ was associated with Bornstein Seafoods Inc. for 40 years and retired as Secretary/Treasurer in 1986.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Freida Melhart; daughters, Carolyn (Gary) Nordtvedt and Darla (Hal) Arnason; four grandchildren: Amy (TJ) Ackerman, Molly Campos, Hal Arnason IV and Sam Arnason; five great-grandchildren: Kelsey, Adrian, Brady, Cyrus and Dane.

A private family service will be held on a later date at Greenacres Memorial Park in the Garden Wing Mausoleum.
