MILDRED ELLEN TUCKER WINSTON, 93, of Lemon Grove, Ca., died November 16 at Monte Vista Lodge Skilled Nursing Facility where she had been a resident since 1998. Mildred was born March 1, 1909 in Hallsville, Mo. to Grover Cleveland and Linnie Rader Tucker. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Columbia, Mo.

She graduated from Columbia High School and received her Bachelor of Science Degree and Masters Degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She held her first teacher's contract for the 1928-29 school year in Boone County, Mo. at Grindstone School. She resigned after two years to continue her education, she received a letter mailed with a 2 cents stamp. The letter stated that "the school board has had a great number of applicants-some were very good material but they aren't Miss Tucker."

Some years later, she taught Algebra at Jefferson Junior High, Columba, Mo. She was a member of Pi Lamba Theda honorary educational society, A.A.U.W. and Eastern Star. Mildred married Waldon Campbell Winston, October 1931 and as a military wife lived in many different states before settling in La Mesa in 1978.

Survivors include her son, Eldon Tucker Winston of Martinsburg, W.V.; her daughter, Sandra G. Loftis of La Mesa, Ca., four grandchildren, Keith C. Winston, Hyattsville, MD; Leslie D. Barkley, Fredrick, MD; Starla D. Lewis, El Cajon, Ca.; Felicia L. Greim, Hubbardston, Mass.; and four great-grandchildren, Blake S. Lewis, Kacie B. Lewis of El Cajon, Ca., Campbell T. Greim, Zoe L. Greim of Hubbardston, Mass. She was predeceased by her husband, Col. Waldon C. Winston and grandson, Scott A. Loftis.

Visitation will be Friday, November 22 from 4-8 p.m. and Funeral services will be at 12 noon Saturday, November 23 both at Erickson-Anderson Mortuary, La Mesa. Interment will be in La Vista Memorial Park, National City. The family suggests remembrances be contributions to Odyssey Hospice.
