This is my direct ancestor. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Jones) Chappell. He was married about 1720/1721 to Elizabeth Briggs, dau. of Henry and Elizabeth (Lucas) Briggs of Surry Co., VA. His death was recorded in the Albemarle Parish Register.

"James Chappell was a Justice Surry Co. (later Sussex) from 1738, and was sheriff of Sussex Co. in 1754 (William and Mary Quarterly, new series Vol., II, p.52. Sussex O.B. 1754-E, p.1. - Exec. Journal of Council of VA, Vol 4, p. 417)....James Chappell's will, dated Oct. 31, 1768 was probated March 16, 1769 in Sussex Co. It mentions his sons, James and Thomas, dau. Elizabeth Mason, Mary Geo, Sarah Mason, Rebecca Nothington, grandsons, Thomas and Howell Tatum, daughter, Amy Smith, son John,daughter Lucretia Carter, son Howell, and grandchildren, James and Henry Chappell, sons of James, Howell Chappell, son of John and Mary Chappell, dau. of Thomas."
