Pink (Rosa) was one of ten children born to a shoemaker. She met Ernst Thaelmann, a German Communist activist and agitator, while working in a laundry. In 1919, their daughter, Irma Thaelmann was born.

Following his arrest, Ernst was held at Buchenwald Concentration Camp, and Pink and Irma were sent to Ravensbrueck Concentration Camp. Pink survived the Holocaust, and later in life, she gave speeches at memorial events at Ravensbrueck.
