In the Senate of the House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of WV on Jan 20, 1842, Col. Cyrus Vance was one of four military officers nominated for the position of brigadier general of a proposed 23rd brigade, but the formation of the proposed brigade was postponed. Cyrus Vance served as a captain in a military company called the Harrison Rifles which was organized in Clarksburg about 1858 under the laws of the state of WV. They were a uniformed company armed with the Harper's Ferry flint locked musket. Capt. Cyrus Vance's Harrison Guards was one of ten companies that offered up their services to the Governor of the Commonwealth of WV for the Mexican War. These ten companies were in excess of what was needed and therefor not called to service. Records of Cyrus Vance having served in the Civil War are yet to be located. Cyrus Vance also served as Post Master of Clarksburg.
Cyrus Vance married on 28 Jun 1831 to Minerva Sarah Davis. They appear in records as parents of Elizabeth Ann(Sheale) and John C. Vance.
