James was the son of Bernard and Ellen McCann.

James had an older brother named John Hugh and a younger sister named Theresa Elizabeth.

On Thursday, April 18, 1917, at the age of 25, James married Florence O'Meara at St. Philomena's Catholic Church, in Churubusco, NY, by the Rev. Murphy, and witnessed by William K. Ryan and Mary O'Meara.

James was a farmer, owning a farm on the county line road outside of the village of Chateaugay. He worked for years as a prison guard at the Dannemora Institute of Criminally Insane. He was elected Assessor for the Town of Chateaugay.

James and Florence had seven children, named here in order of age: John Francis, Marie Theresa, Catherine Helen, Daniel James, Henry Joseph, Florence Winifred, and Hugh Patrick.

James died at his farmhouse on County Line Road in Chateaugay, at the age of 56.

James had 27 grandchildren.
