Richard Patrick Kelly was the son of Francis Kelly (1835-1918) and Mary Murphy Kelly (1851-1906). His paternal grandfather (also named Richard), was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and had immigrated first to Canada, and then to the United States.

Born and raised in Syracuse NY, Richard was the oldest son of Frank and Mary, having 3 older sisters, 3 younger sisters, and 2 younger brothers. He attended Syracuse University, and received a degree in electrical engineering from Niagara University, in Lewiston NY.

Richard worked for the General Electric Co., in Schenectady NY, around the turn of the 20th century, before taking a job on a power plant project in Braxton Co., West Virginia. In 1907, and the age of 27, he married 16-year-old Bessie Frame, from Sutton WV. The couple resided in Gassaway WV, before moving to Akron OH, where their son Richard Paul was born in 1912.

In 1917, Richard moved back to Schenectady with his wife and son, and worked again for GE, until his retirement in 1945. The Kellys lived for a short time on State St., in Schenectady, before moving into a rented farmhouse in the Hamlet of Burnt Hills (Town of Ballston), Saratoga County NY. Richard commuted to work in Schenectady from Burnt Hills until 1920, when the Kellys purchased a home on Broadway, in the Town of Rotterdam (a suburb of Schenectady).

Richard's wife Bessie passed away in September 1941, at the age of 50. She had been suffering from heart disease, and sadly. missed the birth of her first and only grandchild, by one month.

Richard collapsed and died from a heart attack at his retirement dinner, in February of 1945. He was survived by his son Richard Paul, his daughter-in-law Emily and his granddaughter Dorothy.
