Lillian P. Esser, 85, Topeka, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at a Topeka retirement home.

Mrs. Esser was a dietitian at the United Methodist Home from 1972 to 1982. She later was a "grandma" at the Kansas Neurological Institute from 1993 to 1995.

She was born May 10, 1915, in Topeka, and was adopted by John and Mary Hertlein.

She was a former member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

She married Martin P. Esser on Oct. 26, 1937, in Topeka. He died June 4, 1990.

Survivors include two sons, Martin H. Esser, Topeka, and James A. Esser, Meriden; a brother, Leonard Hertlein, Topeka; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Esser will lie in state after 2 p.m. Sunday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care Inc., 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, 66606.
