British Tory Politician. A moderate force in Britain's Conservative Party, Maudling missed a shot at becoming Prime Minister in 1963 when he was defeated for his party's leadership. He served with distinction in the governments of five prime ministers, rising as Chancellor of the Exchequer. In the late 19702, Maudling twice faced expulsion from the House of Commons because of his association with disreputable businessmen although he was cleared of any misconduct, his political career waned.
