SMITHVILLE – Elvye Vernice Chism Harris, 71, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at the Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory after an extended illness. She was born Oct. 4, 1932, in Itawamba County to Lee Roy and Rhoda Ann Tate Chism. She grew up in the New Salem community and had lived in Smithville for many years. She married James m. Harris who preceded her in death. She was a longtime employee of Gilmore Memorial Hospital where she was a ward clerk, and she also worked for the Amory Advertiser and Monroe Trousers Mfg. Co. She was a member of the Trace Road Baptist Church. She enjoyed arts and crafts.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Smithville with the Rev. Jamie Stark officiating. Burial will be in the Young Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, James Allan Harris and his wife, Gloria, of Harker Heights, Texas; a daughter, Sandra Meadows and her husband, Scott, of West Point; two brothers, Earnest Chism and his wife, Maxine, and Dan Chism and his wife, Peggy, all of Smithville; six grandchildren, Sunni, Sarah and Sam Meadows, and Tony, Shilo and Michael Harris; one great-grandchild, Anika Harris.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Earl Chism; and one sister, Evelyn Estis.

Pallbearers will be Roy Lee Estes, Steve Chism, Carlton Irvin, Mike Waters, Delbert Elledge and Robbie Young.
