Jessie Joy's obituary said she was born in Marshalltown, IA and raised and educated in Iowa. At the age of 23 she and her husband moved to California where she went to work for McDonald-Douglas Aircraft as a riveter during the war. The couple moved to Parkdale, Oregon following the war in 1944, where they operated a lath mill for eight years. Jessie and Melvin worked together on construction for several years, too. In 1963 they moved to Eagle Creek, OR where they were living at the time of her death. She also had worked for many years as a central supply clerk at several hospitals in the Portland area, retiring in her early 60s. Jessie enjoyed playing the piano but did not start taking lessons until she was 54. She was survived by her husband, three daughters, 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren and a sister, Maxine Miller. She was preceded in death by a son, Melvin Abbott in July of 1994.
