A Funeral Service for Verona E. Nordquist of Baudette, MN will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 2:00PM at First Lutheran Church in Baudette, MN. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 from 7-9PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Baudette, MN with a prayer service at 9PM. Interment will be held in Pitt Cemetery at a later date.

Verona E. Nordquist passed away on Monday, February 24, 2014 at the LakeWood Care Center at the age of 93.


Verona Elsene Nordquist was born on April 8, 1920 to Louis and Anna (Hogberg) Grund in Pitt, MN. At the age of 5 she was sent to live with her relatives at the passing of her mother. After her high school graduataion she moved back to Pitt. There she married and had 5 children. She worked as a janitor of the Pitt church, school and hall. She worked as a cook at the Pitt school. In 1950 she moved into the Pitt depot.

One of the jobs that she had at the depot was the post master would bring mail bags to her. She would have to get up at and put the mail bags on the Eastbound Passenger train. She did the same thing for the Westbound Passenger train at 3AM.She also worked as a Nurses Aid at the pioneer home and book keeper at Baudette Transfer in Baudette, MN.

Later she moved to Minneapolis, MN. She worked at Sears and the US Postal Service. She remarried and moved to Edmonton, AB. She spent 28 years there, where she worked at the Federal Building. After the passing of her husband she moved back to Pitt.

While living at Pitt she enjoyed spending most of her time in her vegetable and flower gardens. At the age of 93 she moved into the LakeWood Care Center for 5 months until her passing.

Verona is survived by her children, Allan (JoAnn) Ferrier of Pitt, MN, Janice Ferrier of Minneapolis, MN; brother, John Grund of Beaverton, OR; 14 grandchildren; 23 great – grandchildren; 9 great – great – grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; 6 brothers; 1 sister; sons, Wayne Ferrier, Vern Ferrier, Ronnie Ferrier.
