Al Warden, 92; was founder of Warden Oil Co.

A.L. (Al) Warden, founder of Warden Oil Co. and a pioneer in recycling oil and lubricants, died of pneumonia Friday at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. He was 92.

Warden, of Minneapolis, was born near Wadena, Minn. He developed much of his business sense from his father, Frank, who operated a farm and a grocery store and gas station in Staples, Minn. He left the family farm and with a bankroll of $145, invested in a truck to start a hauling company in Minneapolis. He later delivered coal and collected used motor oil, which he thought could be reused. He took classes in chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota and experimented in a lab in his basement. In 1927, he started Warden Oil at 187 Humboldt Av. N., where the business remained until he closed it at age 90 in 1992.

"He was a self-made man and was a pioneer in re-refining oil," said his granddaughter, Sharon Helberg, of Minneapolis. His company sold oil to gas stations and bus companies across the state. He was past president and charter member of the American Petroleum Re-Refiners Association and a founder of the Independent Oil Compounders Association. He flew for the Minnesota Civil Air Patrol and was a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II. He used his oil expertise to help speed shipment of oil supplies from France to bases in Europe. He was a longtime member of BPO Elks Lodge 44 in Minneapolis and was on its board of trustees. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Warden is survived by his sister, Doris Lunser, of Long Prairie, Minn. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Washburn McReavy Funeral Chapel, 2301 Dupont Av. S., Minneapolis. Memorials to the Elks Lodge 44 Youth Camp are suggested.
