Obituary for Carl Woodard

Mr. Carl Daniel Woodard, age 77, of 5710 Summer Place Road, Cedar Bluff, AL, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, in a local hospital.

Mr. Woodard was born in Cordova, AL, on March 10, 1927, and moved to Rome in 1950 from Monticello, AK. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II. Prior to retirement in the mid 1980's, he was associated with General Electric for over 30 years, having been one of the original workers at the plant. For a period of time he served as an officer at the General Electric Federal Employees Credit Union. He was a skilled electrician and carpenter with a love for the outdoors. Mr. Woodard enjoyed raising hunting dogs and attending field trials. He was an accomplished artist, loved fishing, hunting, traveling, golf and camping, and was renowned for his hot tomato sauce. Mr. Woodard had a great love for his children and grandchildren and will be remembered as an humble loving man who would go out of his way to help others.

Mr. Woodard is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Bill Underwood of Rome, Jeanne and Walter Carnes of Macon, GA, and Kimberly Woodard of Shannon, GA; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lillian Renfrow of Cedar Bluff, AL, Elizabeth Smith of Centre, AL, and Betty LaPean of Rome; his wife of 25 years, Della Marcille Woodard of Rome. Several nieces and nephews along with a host of friends across the country also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Woodard will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Huckaby officiating. Matthew Underwood will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Floyd Memory Gardens with Rev. Tony Brooks officiating. The Honor Guard of the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion will administer military graveside honors.

Mr. Woodard will lie in-state at the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends this (Saturday) evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at other hours they may be contacted at 113 Robinhood Road, Rome.

Pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday by 1:30 p.m. and include Randy Edmondson, Paul House, Jessie Clark, Greg Eason, Carl Hall, Matthew Woodard, William Edmondson and Ray Lawhorne. Honorary pallbearers will include Russell Neighbors, Gordon LaPean and Gary LaPean. The Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements of the funeral of Mr. Carl Daniel Woodard.
