IN MEMORIAM, published in the "Village Voice" for Highland Spring Village

Ken (Kenny) Marks 1922–2014
By John Cappello

A bright light in Highland Springs Village was extinguished on February 22. Kenny Marks, who was born on May 30, 1922 in Bronx, New York City, passed away that morning.

Kenny lived in New York until the start of WWII when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Ken served as a Top Turret Gunner on a B24. He was on 59 combat bombing missions in the China/Burma/India (CBI) Combat Theater. He also flew 32 milk run trips flying over the hump (the Himalayans). He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and four Air Medals. He must have liked the Air Corp because he made it a career.

In 1949, he married Pearl in New York City and in 1964, after 23 years, he retired from the Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant. After retiring they settled in Northern California where he worked as an Engineering Salesman for Military Escape Systems. In 1974 he left Northern California and moved to Anaheim. On his 55th birthday (May 1977) he finally found paradise and moved to Highland Springs Village.

Kenny was a member of the CBI Veterans Association since the end of WWII. He was their National Commander in 1996/97. Ken and Pearl traveled all over the United States on various CBI Veteran Association conventions and business.

At HSV, he was the Men's Golf Club president on three different occasions. He's worked on various village and golf course related projects. For many years he served as the Golf Shop Treasurer and served on the men's club Board of Directors.

On a personal note, Kenny and I spent many hours together in the golf shop talking about New York City and the Air Force. We served together on the Men's Golf Club Board of Directors and for seven years we were on the men's club awards banquet committee; he was the chairman and I was his assistant. Kenny was a very special friend, not just to me, but too many.

Life in the Village will be a little less bright now without our special friend Kenny Marks. Rest in peace old friend.

God Bless you and keep you, Buster.
Love always,
Susie
