Henry was a member of Company C, 8th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers. He mustered in on February 18, 1862 as a Private. Henry was wounded in the shoulder at Port Hudson, Louisana on June 14, 1863. In 1864, he was sent to the Shenandoah Valley, where he remained in service until the end of the war.
In 1894, Henry and Ella Sherwood married. They adoped a daughter, then 9 years old. in November, 1902. The St. Johnsbury Republican reported she was "from Barton anding" (now Oreleans, Vermont)..

An obituary was published in The St Johnsbury Caledonian (St. Johnsbury, Vermont) December 21, 1904. "At the time of his enlistment he wa a particularly robust young man,but ill health, contrated during his long army service, made him an invalid for the rest of his life."
