In 1860, James graduated from Dartmouth College (Hanover, New Hampshire). He taught school in Vermont until September 8, 1862 when he mustered into Company B of the 15th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers. He served as their Captain until August 5, 1863.

After mustering out, James spent some time at home, then worked at the Military Hospital in Fort Schuyler, New York, and began studying medicine. He earned his MD in 1866, and began work as a physician at New York City's St. Luke's Hospital. In New York, he met Anna Winchester Dana. They married in Portland, Maine October 31, 1867.

James and Anna moved to South America, where they ran a sheep farm Anna had inherited from her father. James also practiced medicine in Brazil. The couple's children, Annie, Howard, and Harold were born in Argentina. Howard passed away there before the family returned to Vermont.

Some sources suggest the family returned in 1890; James' obituary in the Burlington Free Press, September 1 1892 states they returned in 1880. The death announcement published August 25 1892 states Anna and two children were still alive at the time of James' death. Other sources suggest Annie and Howard passed away in Argentina before the family returned to Vermont.
