Death of James W. Beall Recalls Line to Marion Before Street Cars Came.
The death of James W. Beall, which occurred at a local hospital Tuesday, recalls to the pioneer residents of Linn county an interesting feature of the early days. In the early eighties, before the days of street cars, Mr. Beall drove a cab between Cedar Rapids and Marion. The cab route was out over the old Marion road and the trip, which is not made in twenty minutes by street car, was then long and tedious. Mr. Beall also was proprietor of a livery and cab company here and was prominent among the early settlers of the county.
Mr. Beall was two years old at the time of his coming to Iowa in 1846. He made the long and dangerous trip over the plains in a prairie schooner, coming with his parents from Ross county Ohio, where he was born. In 1880, he was married to Miss Anna Ayery of this city, who died four years later. Two sons, Otis and Harry, and two sisters, Mrs. A.J. Noble and Mrs. George Liddle, survive. All live in this city.
A man of exemplary habits and quiet demeanor, Mr. Beall was noted for his honesty and unselfishness. He was a liberal contributor to all worthy causes. He had been in poor health for many years before his death, but was taken to the hospital only about a week before his death. He was 72 years old.
