Dick attended public schools in Rock Island and graduated from Rock Island High School in 1958. During his school years, at age 15, he help organize a four-piece combo called The Vampers. Dick played the drums and the group played together for several years. He joined the musician union at age 16.
During the early 60's Dick joined the National Guard. After basic training he ventured into the world selling wholesale liquor in the Quad Cities. In the mid-60's he opened the Celebrity Club, a jazz club in downtown Moline. It became a very popular place to gather and attracted some of the biggest jazz musicians in the country. Dick's next venture was into management and partial ownership of the Flamingo in Silvis. During his later years he was bar manager for fraternal organizations, then working at Rexie's, Rock Island before his retirement.
Dick was an avid golfer. He loved Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, and had a standing tee time every Wednesday for many years. He never lost his love of jazz and other types of music . He attended sessions of the Catfish Jazz Society until his health failed.
He will be missed by his special friends , Dennis Fish, Joe Cope, Larry Fickenscher, Tom Roberts, Phil Herbst and many others.
