Robert James Bolt passed away quietly on October 1, 2013 at age 93. Bob was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the youngest of eight children. He was a graduate of Calvin College and the University of Michigan Medical School. In 1945 he married Phyllis Mae VanDenBerg, also from Grand Rapids. Bob served in the US Naval Reserve Medical Corps from 1946-48 then returned to the U of M as a professor of Internal Medicine. In 1966 Bob, Phyllis and their four children moved to Davis, California for the challenge of opening a new medical school where Bob became the founding chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. During his long career at UCD Bob received many honors, lectured worldwide and published almost 100 articles and books. He retired in 1997. Bob's life was full and complete, filled with humor and love of family; he is survived by his four children, six grandchildren and spouses.
